Ancient Music and Building Blocks of Music Theory

In this unit, students will learn about the role of music in ancient cultures, such as Greek/Roman music dramas, Native American music, the African Talking Drum, and early instruments in Egypt, India, and China. They will also learn some of the basic elements of a musical score (sheet music). This includes basic rhythmic notation and time signatures. This unit concludes with a project that involves building a percussion instrument, and composing and presenting a rhythmic pattern to assist in telling a story or conveying a message.
